CALENDAR: consult before meetings/ send info to community

January-Feb :
  -Inquire about SLC drought tolerant turf program to get discounts on drought tolerant lawn seed (https://extension.usu.edu/cwel/news/low_wateruse_turf)
   -prune fruit trees.  (During late summer, put masking tape on tree branches whose fruit is lowering them onto roofs, to mark them for pruning later)
   -sand & oil wooden tool handles, sharpen as needed
  -Touch up community ID on tools
  -Consider what professional tree work we need done 
  -Fertilize fruit trees trees at least 6 weeks before they bloom.

Several times a year, especially after strong wind, gather all fallen branches & check for hanging broken branches to be removed

March:
-start testing irrigation system for leaks (don't leave stop-and-waste valves on, just turn on while testing them and then turn off)
 -ask community for starts and cuttings to add to the landscape
 -Re-seed lawn with drought tolerant seed/clover as needed (https://extension.usu.edu/cwel/news/low_wateruse_turf)
 -Best time of year to remove siberian elm saplings before they start vigorously growing
 

April:
   -continue with testing & repair all sprinkler & drip systems
    -Begin weed whacking early weed growth on berms for weed suppression. NOTE: Berms can be mowed for weed suppression, but remember to set the mower in a higher position than for lawn mowing, otherwise the blades damage the irrigation lines
    -Check stumps that were treated with epsom salt and covered with black tarp for new growth. Remove new growth and apply more epsom salt: https://www.trees.com/gardening-and-landscaping/how-to-remove-tree-stump-with-epsom-salt
    -sharpen blades on mowers
   -Add shrubs/perennials/trees as needed to the landscape
  -Later April/early May, aerate lawn & spread compost
    -Best time of year to remove siberian elm saplings before they start vigorously growing
    -provide trees with supplemental water by running a hose to the tree and turning the water on low for an hour. Doing this about once a week through spring will help them survive our hot and dry summers.

May:
   -turn on water system and program timers
   -weed wack:/ hand weed around plantings west berm, behind the common house near Utah street, by duck pen, east driveway, wild area, by the Cheyenne street entrance
    -northfield & alley, mow once in May, every two weeks in June, once in July, once in August, once September 
    -mow common house lawn
   -mulch around trees/perennials to conserve water
   -add thick layers of mulch (6" minimum) to pathways/berms/etc for weed suppression
     -Add shrubs/perennials/trees as needed to the landscape
    -provide trees with supplemental water by running a hose to the tree and turning the water on low for an hour. Doing this about once a week through spring will help them survive our hot and dry summers

June:

 -Find scrap lumber, notch, & put under branches bending badly with weight of fruit
 -Put masking tape on tree branches whose fruit is lowering them onto roofs, to mark them for pruning later

September:
      -mow common house lawn
   -Divide perennials, add to the landscape where appropriate. 
   -Plant drought tolerant seeds and bulbs
   -add thick layers of mulch (6" minimum) to pathways/berms/etc for weed suppression

October:
  -shut down water system, turn off timers, store the vacuum breaker seal valve/backflow preventer by unit 25 in the workshop for the winter
   -Divide perennials, add to the landscape where appropriate. 
   -Plant drought tolerant seeds and bulbs
   -add thick layers of mulch (6" minimum) to pathways/berms/etc for weed suppression

November :
  -Do an inventory of tools in the workshop. Whatever tools we needed during the warm season and didn't have, include in landscaping budget
  -trim evergreens & give trimmings to people for wreaths & decoration
    -Divide perennials, add to the landscape where appropriate. 
   -Plant drought tolerant seeds and bulbs
   -add thick layers of mulch (6" minimum) to pathways/berms/etc for weed suppression

December:
   -cut shrubs that overlap the common house
