Landscape Committee Walk-Thru

April 15, 2023

Members participating: Emilie, Alexandra, Cheryl, Lila, Robin, Vinnie

Purpose: Assess condition of the trees, landscaping, and need for debris and brush removal for safety and fire mitigation on WACOHO property.

Key points

  1. Clean-up Week:  April 17-24, 2023. Please bring branches, dead trees/shrubs to east garden area. A trailer will be loaded all week and taken to composite fill on Saturday, April 22. All other items (discarded furniture, unused wooden structures, large debris, etc that don’t fit in our dumpsters) can be moved to the same area and will be taken to the dump on Monday.  We will need volunteers at any time to start moving debris near the trailer. Safety and fire mitigation

  2. Emilie and Alex will contact 3 arbor companies to assess and provide quotes for removal and/or trimming of weakened and dying Siberian elm trees in the wild area (Phase 3) and removal of large trees that are very close to Units and pose risk of damage to foundations.

  3. In-house tree/shrub trimming for fire mitigation through-out property

Trees/branches of particular concern:

  1. In the wild area, several Siberian elms have dead branches, are at risk of falling.

  2. Pear tree growing immediately next to Unit 15 poses  risk to foundation  (In-house removal and replant)

  3. Large Catapla tree between Units 4 & 5 , risk to foundation

  4. Dead maple tree behind Unit 8 by westward carport (In-house removal)

  5. Fruit trees in dog run are very stressed and will most likely die this summer without irrigation. (In-house)

  6. Large tree in front of Unit 17  lifting up porch and possible risk to foundation

  7. Tree in back, side area of Unit 13 too close to foundation

  8. Tree in back area between Units 19 & 22 reclines towards Unit 19 (In-house removal)

  9. Branch hanging over duck pond, risk of falling (In-house removal)

  10. Dead and at risk of falling branches of large Siberian elm behind Unit 7 (In-house trimming)

  11. West berm next to parking lot: dead branches overhanging parked cars and brush scratching the front of cars (In-house trimming) Emilie will be reaching out again to SLC about dead branches hanging over berm.

  12. Common House drain ditch: Siberian elms are growing in ditch, hindering drainage (In-house removal)

Clean-Up and Debris removal

  1. Many units have collected debris over time on their back porches and in the back areas: piles of dry brush, Christmas trees, branches and fallen limbs, discarded furniture, unused wooden structures. rotting lumber, trash, and various metal items/scraps. These are real concerns for safety and fire mitigation for the whole neighborhood. Respectfully we remind all residents of our HOA guidelines for residents to maintain areas surrounding their units. We ask all residents to take advantage of the clean-up week to remedy these conditions and work toward the safety and beautification of WACOHO.

  2. Lumber on the ground behind various units is being used to  cross water-soaked areas. Be aware that some are a tripping hazard.

  3. Street gutters on both sides of the entrance from Cheyene St need to be cleared of debris and dirt to prevent clogging the drains.

  4. Piles of chopped wood need to be centralized in one location, near the fire pit. Logs, too big for burning, need to be removed, split, or used as seats.

  5. Fire pit area is still in disarray and needs cleaning up.

If any resident has a landscape clean-up project they need help with, please contact the landscape committee and we will schedule a time to assist you.
