Landscaping Minutes : July 31, 2023

Attendees: Kay, Robin, Jorge, Amy, Chelsea, Lila, Carol, Ben

  • Defining Scope of Responsibility of Landscaping Committee.
    • Tree planting
    • Tree pruning
    • Tree removal
    • Tree stump removal
    • Irrigation / sprinkler systems
    • Pest control in common areas, e.g. mosquito dunks, fly traps, etc
    • Lawn care, including reseeding and replanting lawn when needed
    • Shrub trimming/pruning in common areas
    • Ensure main walkway is accessible by emergency vehicles
  • Out of Scope of Landscaping Committee's responsibility:
    • Leveling pavers in the walkways of common areas (Maintenance)
    • Landscaping in the Limited Common Area surrounding units (this is the responsibility of the unit owners)
  • Plan for tracking landscaping tasks, prioritizing work parties, etc.:  Build a "Landscaping Tracker" similar to the "Maintenance Tracker" created earlier this year for the Maintenance Committee.   Cheryl to take a first shot at building the tracker; take the info contained in previous "Adopt A Spot" documentation, and create a spreadsheet/matrix showing specific regions of WaCoHo property (e.g. dog run, west berm, etc) as rows and in columns show the tasks needing to be done in each region (as defined in "Scope of Responsibility" above).  Landscaping Committee can  consense on the format/content via email. This will be stored on the main WasatchCommons Google drive but will be shared with all members of the Landscaping team.  Once completed, this will be presented to the community at an ACM
  • We need to do an inventory of:
    • Tools required by Landscaping Committee in order to efficiently perform tasks versus...
      • Tools already available to us in the Workshop
      • Tools personally owned by WaCoHo members that they are willing to share with Landscaping
  • Irrigation/drip system on west berm.  We need a professional consultant to help us define what is needed there in order to support the trees, shrubs, etc that we want to plant there.   Redoing the irrigation system there is expected to be a big job.
  • Ben is writing a proposal regarding the levels of approval required before a tree is removed.
  • We probably need further discussion about tree planting efforts outside of the Landscaping Committee.  Tree planting is encouraged, but it's better to have everyone on board to ensure the long term livelihood of the tree (e.g. ensure proper watering, make sure it's not so close to a structure that it will later need to be removed because it is too close to one of the WaCoHo structures, etc)
