Wasatch Commons Process for Management Committee Election
Information about the election:
A. Since Wasatch Commons is a cohousing community, and normally operates by consensus process,
we very rarely have voting. The annual election of Management Committee (MC) and the passing of the
annual budget are exceptions, as governed by our bylaws.
B. Per our bylaws, official members of MC must be unit owners.
C. There are five official members of MC. Terms are two years. The terms are split, therefore, the
number of people elected each year will differ.
D. If you are not able to be present and the annual meeting, you may give your proxy to another person.
Proxy must be given in writing to the community at the annual meeting. There is a helpful form provided
for this at the common house, or it can be provided written and signed on other paper. It can specify a
vote for a particular individual for each open position or can choose an owner to cast the votes for them.
E. There will be one vote PER UNIT for each position, not one vote per individual. If there is more than
one person in a unit, it is up to them to determine how to vote. The vote may be split if necessary.
F. People may run for re-election.
Process for the election:
1. IMPORTANT: If you are nominated, please do NOT decline the nomination until after the step 4
below “Asking.” This gives everyone the opportunity to hear about the nominees prior to voting.
2. Nominations: Any of those at the meeting nominate one or more owners to serve on MC. People may nominate themselves. Nominees will be listed on the board in the sitting room.
3. Attributes: Anyone, in any order, may give acknowledgements and attributions for any of the nominees saying why they would make a good member of MC. Nominees may say why they would like to serve.
4. Asking: The facilitator will ask each nominee if they will run, and if elected, would they serve. This
will give us a final list of nominees. Also, the facilitator will ask the group if there is anything else we
need to consider before voting.
5. Vote: Each unit will receive a ballot and may vote once for EACH open position.
Current management members that are not up for re-election will gather the ballots and count the
votes and announce the top vote getters to fill the open positions.
